TWO DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES with a specialisation in Critical Discourse Studies

TWO DOCTORAL STUDENTS IN MEDIA AND COMMUNICATION STUDIES with a specialisation in Critical Discourse Studies

School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences

ORU 2.2.1-733/2014

Candidates are invited to submit their applications for research studies in media and communication studies at Örebro University, Sweden. The starting date of the programme is in the autumn 2014.

The Department of Media and Communication Studies at Örebro University is a thriving research environment of recognised international standing. It houses such peer-reviewed international publications as Journal of Language and Politics and Social Semiotics, as well as the book series Bloomsbury Advances in Critical Discourse Studies. It is one of the world’s leading centres in such areas as critical discourse studies and global journalism. Örebro University’s media and communications research takes place within three research areas/teams. The research group Discourse and Communication Studies specialises in such areas as critical discourse studies, analysis of broadcast talk and media language, and studies of organisational communication and public relations. The Media and Journalism Studies group focuses on media theory and analysis, traditional and new/social media, as well as on journalism studies including global journalism and transformations of journalistic practice. The third group – Visual Communication and Film Studies – works on various aspects of visual and multimodal communication and on critical approaches to film and visual culture. For more information on these research areas, please refer to the department’s web page: http://www.oru.se/English/Research/Research-Subjects/HumUS/Media-and-Communication-Studies/.

We are now looking to recruit two doctoral students in the field of critical discourse studies. Located within the thriving research environment of the School of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences (HumES), the Department of Media and Communication Studies is one of the world’s leading centres in critical discourse studies. In order to strengthen our research environment, proposed projects should be empirically driven and offer new ways of understanding the role of language and communication in contemporary society, politics, media and culture. They should be based on a detailed, critical-linguistic analysis of media and communication and candidates should be prepared to relate these to the dynamics of social contexts such as sites of production and reception of discourse.
