New book: Teletext in Europe. From the Analog to the Digital Era

This special issue of Nordicom Review examines photojournalism in editorial processes in a period of paradigmatic change that so far has received little scholarly attention. On the one hand, news is becoming more visual—including a marked increase of images in print and digital newspapers, as well as a proliferation of visual storytelling on several platforms. On the other hand, professional roles and newsroom processes are changing rapidly; in many news organizations, the photo departments are being reduced or even eliminated. As a result, news organizations are increasingly turning to agency and freelance content.
Nordicom’s coverage of the media development is reported in the two newsletters Media Trends in the Nordic Countries (also available in Scandinavian) and European Media Policy.
In this special issue of Nordicom Review we invite proposals for papers addressing one of the most important, yet under-addressed issues in contemporary European media and communication research: the presence and role of ethnic minorities working within European media organizations (from production all the way up to corporate management). Research on the representation of ethnic minorities in television and radio programming, as well as in films and print media, has provided valuable insights, yet these studies have not been complimented by work addressing work “behind the scenes.” Thus, our understanding of the complex problems of minority representation – for example, stereotypical characters in television fiction or a lack of depth in news coverage – tend to stagnate at the organizational level.

Northern Lights: Books and publishing in a digital age
The 2015 volume of the journal Northern Lights concerns the ongoing transformations of the medium of the book in terms of technology, industry, aesthetics and culture. It is edited by Rasmus Helles and Stig Hjarvard (University of Copenhagen) and brings together perspectives from several research fields, in particular media studies, publishing studies, and literary sociology. The first part of the volume considers the changing technological and industrial context of book publishing, in particular digitalization of the industry, the emergence of e-books and audiobooks, and the influence of open access policies. In the second part of the volume the contributions focus on the transformations of the book medium itself, i.e. how texts and literary aesthetics are influenced by new technologies and how authorship and reading of books are culturally changed.
